Why Queen has inspired me to tell you to write a messy first draft of your memoir

Kia ora,
Over the past week I’ve been watching The Crown on Netflix as the world adjusts to a world without Queen Elizabeth.

I was more upset then I expected to be. She was always there, a matriarch. Although I live literally on the other side of the planet, she’s everywhere in our little commonwealth country – on our coins, in our street names, and she oversaw our government.

I’m glad she died in Scotland. It seemed to be a place where she felt she could relax and be herself.

When you’re writing your story, I encourage you to be yourself too. In fact, especially in the beginning, it’s so important to allow yourself to simply write and get those memories and thoughts out of your mind and onto a document.

Your first draft will probably be messy and that’s ok. You can tidy it up during the second and third times you go over it. But when you first write your story, just let it come as it needs to.

I’ve included a very short video about this for you here:

Remember, your story matters.

PS I’ve just launched my new online course Write Your Memoir. It’s easy to join up, and then you can work your way through the lessons at your own pace until you finish your story! Plus if you want company, I’m there to support you.
