Why you should keep a notebook close-by when you’re writing your memoir

Kia ora!

Once you dive into writing your memoir it’ll be almost as if you’ve gone back in time, to the days you’re thinking of.

The more you focus on those times, the more details you’ll remember from those days – people, experiences and feelings will resurface.

That’s why I recommend you start a system to jot down those random memories, just a notebook or a page on your phone or computer that you can easily get to night and day (yes those 3am memories may happen!).

Make sure you can always get to it easily and don’t worry about being tidy or perfect, just so long as you can read your writing later!

These little details will bring your story to life down the track.

Personally I keep several exercise books near my bed, a different one for each project I’m working on. I usually date the page and write ideas as they come. Then it’s easy to return to my inspired scribblings.

Remember, your story will one day become someone’s history. It matters, so go to town with those details and tell your story completely.
