Why your unique voice is your memoir super power

I’m wearing my winter attire: gumboots and a Swanndri.

This week I want to talk about your unique voice as a writer. We all have one and you are most certainly no exception.

When you write your story, I invite you to relax and be yourself. Write as if you’re on the couch, cradling your favourite drink, and sharing your story with your loved ones (who are of course, listening attentively).

Use the words and tone of voice you always use, not ones you think ā€˜a writer’ should use.

I had a memoir client a while back who grew up in Italy and moved to New Zealand in his twenties. He felt sooo un-confident about writing his memoir because of English being his second-language.

But the thing was, his (very much grown up) children were emphatic that they wanted to preserve his voice, including all the special ways he said things. So that’s how we wrote his book.

And I feel really good knowing that long after he’s gone his family will read his life story and hear his voice.

More about writing in your unique in my blog.

Keep writing, your story is worth it.

PS if you’d like some company as you write, an easy way you can do that is via my course Write Your Memoir. And those who are able to make it are invited to join me in Tākaka for a day of writing mid-June. After that we’ll meet each season.

PPS if you’d ever like some writing inspiration in video form, I’m always uploading free content to my YouTube channel, right here.
