Your words are valuable breadcrumbs for future generations

Kia ora,

This week I want to remind you that without exception, each person’s story matters.

Your story is part of our social fabric and connects us to our past. If you take the time to record it today, one day someone might read it and piece together some important clues about their own past. They might be your children, grandchildren, cousins … they might not even be related to you. But we’re all connected, in this small world.

So leave clues for them. Leave words as bread crumbs. Tell us about the people you’ve lived amongst, their first and last names. Tell us about the places you lived in or visited, the homes, the villages, towns, cities, countries. Tell us when it all happened, yes give us dates, even times if you can. I still wish my mum knew the exact time I was born!

Tell us what you know about your history, because you might be the last person to hold that information.

Start at your beginning, today.

PS if you’d like the road map, and skills to record your story, come join us on my online course Write Your Memoir. This Saturday we’re gathering in Tākaka for a ‘once a season’ meet, to work on our stories. In spring I’m planning to host a writing session in Wellington for Write Your Memoir students.
