Hey there memoir writer,
How’s your story coming along this week?
Over the weekend I got to write another page or two of my novel, ahhh it was so fun! I’m at that busy stage of life raising children and working full time. Once a month our local writers group meet and I dive back into writing my book. At this rate I’ll have it done in ten years! I’m only half joking!
Over the weekend a student on my Write Your Memoir course asked me a great question: she asked me what I thought about including photos of the hand writing from letters and other documents, especially given that letters are so rare these days.
I told her I wholeheartedly agree with including images of peoples’ handwriting in books. So much character oozes from that handwriting.
In the case above – a book I wrote two years ago – we’ve included occasional images of the diary entries, and we’ve also typed out the text from that World War II soldier’s diary pages, as sometimes his writing was hard to read.
In this way future generations can catch a glimpse into his war experience, without having to trawl through the original diaries, unless they want to dive in deeper.
You do need to digitise (for example scan) these images, so they can be designed into the books.
I hope this little tip of the week helps you!
Keep writing,
Charlotte x
PS
I talk about this subject in Module Four of my course Write Your Memoir. I’m taking my course to Wellington in spring and would love to hear from you if you’re interested. Also, tonight I’m meeting online with students to touch base, answer any questions and talk about ‘how to bring your characters to life.’ Sign up today to join us!
