Stage three of writing your memoir, family history or life story: Design

So you’ve written your story, you’ve had it edited and proofread and now you’re ready for the next stage: design.

At this stage you’ll need to send your word files and digitised files of your images to a designer. Now I’m no designer, so I can’t tell you how to design your book.

What I can tell you is that your designer’s job is to prepare your text and your images into a specific type of book file (or files) to send to a book printer so that it’s ready to be printed. They will probably need to do a ‘proof copy’ of your book, before they print however many copies you want.

At the design stage you’ll work with someone to place the text and the images throughout your book so it reads well and it looks good. They’ll use a specific design programme on their computer. You’ll probably be emailing back and forth with them.

We go into more detail about this stage of the book making process in my online course Write Your Memoir in module five: Formatting and Design.

I hope this info helps, many people don’t realise there are three key stages to writing a book (not including marketing) and this design stage is essential if you want to print a good quality book that will last generations.

Write on,

Charlotte
