Kia ora,
I write with a brown dog resting on my slippered feet.
Today I want to talk to you about lifting the hood on why you are who you are.
One of my students is a great orator. He can spin a yarn and hold his audience captivated with stories of his interesting life. He’s travelled the globe on all sorts of adventures.
But one thing he quietly said to me at a recent Memoir workshop was: I want to tell my children what I experienced long before they appeared. I want them to know why I am who I am, because it’s not easy to explain.
I think he raised a good point. You lived many years before the next generation appeared. You learned how to exist in this world from the example your family and community set you, who did you learn to be? You navigated your way through many adventures, who did this shape you to become?
Share those stories in your memoir, because they matter. They formed the person you became. Those stories are part of your family’s history.
Write on.
