What happened before you were 20 memoir writer?

Kia ora dear writer,

I spoke to a younger student of my memoir course this week who reminded me that we can live a lot of life before we even reach 20.

This person doesn’t want to write a family history, but wants to share significant experiences and moments, from birth onwards.

And of course that is a wondrous idea! Because of course! We can live so much life in our first 20 years.

Today I thought I might pass this inspiration onto you – here are some prompts for your memoir:

What did you experience in your first two decades? Did you have some adventures? Face some hard times? Did you overcome some challenges? What are your first memories?

Write about these times.

What happened? When? Who was part of this part of your life? How did you navigate these times? Who did you grow into?

How were things different then? Socially, politically, and in your family?

Your early memories are often rich with information for future generations and for our communities. Don’t hold back. Be honest.

Write on,

Charlotte x
