Read Rach’s poignant story + imperfection

Kia ora dear writer,

How are you? How is your story coming along this week?

This week I have another snippet of a memoir from people in our memoir community. This one’s from a student on my course Write Your Memoir. Her name is Rach Hunt and I feel a tug in my heart, a sadness, a richness and a curiosity as I read her words.

‘It’s a woman’s expected course, this having of babies. Our bodies are just made for it, empty but stretchable spaces hidden inside, waiting to house a blossoming being. Full and wholesome hips able to stretch and open to give passage to new life. Breasts round and nurturing, swelling with sweetness to nourish a tiny form. And minds able to pan wide, holding vast amounts of competing information yet able to make quick decisions to ensure those in our care are safe, seen, known and loved.

Like most women I know, I grew up knowing that one day I would fulfill this God-gifted inevitability. I would fall in love, marry (someone just like my Dad), and in time become a strong earth mother, full and rich with the blessing of having given birth to ones made of my own stuff, naturally nurturing the helpless babes, and patiently growing these new eternal beings into something good, someone magnificent. But like many of my “knowings”, the God-gift has been different, my path not well lit nor trod by others ahead of me, marking my way and cheering me on.’

I hope this piece of writing inspired you, as it did me. What did you feel and see as you read it?

Are you writing your life story, or a history? Pop over to my blog for tips and more inspiration.

As I said at a free talk I gave this week at Tākaka Library, the most important thing is to keep writing, one word at a time, and know that it’s ok for your first draft to be messy and imperfect, they always are.

PS next Wednesday in our private Facebook group for Write Your Memoir students, I’ll be talking about the subject ‘building habits to stay consistent as you write.’ Does this appeal? If it does, you can join my course for the old price ($100 less than it is now) via this link. And you can get the same offer, but pay it off over nine months here.
