Four things to include in your photo captions

Hello lovely 👋

This is Charlotte tuning in from Tākaka, Nee Zealand. How are you on this fine day? How’s that story of yours?

Today I want to share one thing with you that I talk about in module four of my online course Write Your Memoir – it’s about photo captions.

Most people I work with include images in their books. And each image needs a caption to go with it.

For example:

Charlotte Squire, Wellington Airport, April 2024, trying to get the dragon from Lord of the Rings in the background.

A photo caption explains who is in the photo, where and when it was taken, and maybe what’s going on. It’s very easy to overlook spelling mistakes in them, maybe because we tend to focus more on the main text of the story, also because they sometimes come at the last minute, after the story has been proofread.

Four things you need to double check in your captions are: the spelling of people’s names, the spelling of place names, the perspective they’re written in, and that they cover the basic info: who, where, when and maybe what’s happening.

Ideally, when you get your story proofread, your photo captions are included.

I hope that was helpful. The most important thing is to keep writing until you finish your story, for you, for future generations.

Charlotte x
