Little steps, memoir writer

Kia ora, hello from a beautiful mild winter’s day here in Tākaka, New Zealand 👋🏼

My mother and I have just walked a five year old, a nine year old and one prancy dog home from school.

And speaking of steps, this week I was reminded of the value of them. I’m starting an exciting new book for a dear client and I’m writing it around my ‘day job’ as a writer for a crowdfunding company, and other interesting projects.

If I can get one hour a day to work on this new book, I’ll be happy. Even half an hour would be enough. The point is, it’s all progress.

So let’s shine the spotlight on you and your story now. Wherever you’re at with your story, the most important thing is to keep putting one foot in front of the other.

Remember that your first draft is going to be gloriously imperfect, all first drafts are. Well, all mine most certainly are!

If you’re not sure if you should include something, do include it for your first messy draft, you can take it out if you need to once you read back over your words. If you’re not sure where something should go, just write it, it can be re-organised down the track thanks to the wonder of ‘copy and paste’ on computers.

Once your first draft is written, you and others can go over and over it and polish it up until it shines.

Let all those ideas, memories, stories emerge, because they matter.

Write on.
