Well hello there dear memoir writer 👋
How are you and how is that story of yours?
Yesterday I met with a student on my memoir course, for an online chat to make sure she had everything she needed.
She shared a few pages of her story with me and once again I was transported to life before fridges, TVs or a washing machine.
This was the 1950s in New Zealand. I was fascinated with all the details about how she and her family washed their clothes, entertained themselves (without TV, let alone the internet!), and lived.
It’s easy to take these memories for granted but I hope you do take the time to record your memories of the little details of how you did life in your earlier decades.
For example, what did you eat and how did you cook it? What did you do for fun? How did you get around? What did you do to earn a crust? What was your daily work routine?
I find those details so interesting, it feels like another world to me. Who knows who will pour over your words one day, eager to understand the world you came from.
So write on, because your story will one day become someone’s history.
