Does your book cover matter?

Kia ora from my cosy kitchen,

I’ve got curry and rice on the stove and the fake fire ablaze.

How’s that story of yours coming along?

I’m just about to finish a book for a client and we’re working on the cover. We’ve gone back and forth about it quite a few times, and I thought I’d pass on something that I’ve remembered (I’m at the life stage where I learn, forget, then remember things often, ha ha!) from this experience.

Contrary to the cliche, people do often judge a book by its cover. Book covers really do matter. If you’ve decided to print a book with a cover, it’s worth looking around from this day on to find some samples of book covers that you really like.

This way, when you hand your precious book text over to a book designer, they’ll easily understand your preferred style, font, colours and layout. Believe me, it’s 1000 times easier to show them visually, than to describe it for them.

So start gathering those samples! Take photos of them, or save them to your computer, or even save the whole books. One day, you’ll be thankful that you did.

Write on,
