Kia ora 👋🏼
If you’re new here, welcome! And if you’ve been with me for a while, it’s good to be with you again this week.
Last week I invited people to share a small snippet of their story, a mere 100 words, so I could share it with others. And they did!
Here’s (slightly over) 100 words from Cathy:
Back Springs Gardens; an uninspired, brick built Victorian terraced slum, with no running water other than an outside pump, and an outside toilet, shared by many other families is where the 1861 census finds the young couple living with their first child, a daughter named Catherine.
Henry’s occupation is listed as “Brewer” and Catherine as a “Musick” player, so perhaps she was an accomplished piano player, but whether she was a countess or not remains an enigma as does all their backstory.
Catherine and Henry had eight children, three boys and five girls. The second youngest child, Alice, was my great grandmother, “Great Nannie Taylor” who out of her siblings was the longest lived, dying at eighty-two from pneumonia.
What do you think? Does it make you want to read more? I would love to read your thoughts about Cathy’s 125 words, and I might share them in the next newsletter.
I like the fact that Cathy’s managed to include important details such as dates and occupation, while also managing to pull me into her story of the young couple with their first child. Sometimes people can get very focused on the details yet struggle to bring flow and personality into their story, so it’s interesting to see how Cathy’s done this. I also appreciate that she told us Alice was her great grandmother – it’s easy to get lost with all the greats!
How about you? Would you like to send in 100 words to share with our community? Send it to: charlottesquirecoms@gmail.com
Let’s get your story finished, because it matters!
