Your writing routine and why it matters

Kia ora, hello, how’s your story coming along this week?

So – your writing routine. Let’s talk about that. Do you have one? Comment here and let me know? I’m curious.

After a few years of teaching folk to write their stories, I’ve moved into the ‘yes, you do need a writing routine’ camp. Before that I was in the: ‘just do it when you can’ camp.

Watching students on my memoir course, I have learned that a steady routine is going to get you there much more certainly than fitting your story around other projects, willy-nilly.

It’s about focus. You do need to focus on your story, and make it one of your priorities, or otherwise, it’s going to keep taking a back seat.

Also – do something for me? Start today. This very day. Even if it’s only to plan your routine. Because you’re not getting any younger. None of us are.

If you can even commit to half an hour, three times a week, each morning at 10am, you watch what happens. You will steadily inch towards finishing your story. Some days you might feel like a literary genius. Other days you won’t feel happy with anything you write (all of which is usually more about your mood, than your work).

But imagine how much you could accomplish in one year. What if you could write 500 words per week? That’s one or two pages that equate to around 26,000 words. This time next year, you could be gearing up to give your family your book for Christmas.

Write on lovely, because your story matters,
