Who are you writing your memoir for?

Kia Ora 👋🏼

Before you even start writing your story, it’s good to know who you’re writing it for.

This will clarify what you do and don’t share as you write. You may not want to share sensitive and personal family information in a book beyond your family.

I’ve just finished a life story and family history for a client – who is very clear that her story is for her close family only.

Actually this is part of her gorgeous dedication:

And she stayed focused on these readers as she pulled her information together (including trips to parts of Europe to research family history).

Where as another book I wrote for a group, about a community funded ‘Village Green,’ was intended to remind folks of the original intent for that small but loved piece of land, and to pass that story (which included legal agreements) onto local council for their records.

I interviewed over 20 people and now you can buy that book in shops, and even read it in the waiting room of a local bank.

So who is your story for? Who will read it? And what do they need to know?

And most importantly, write on.
