The power of 30 minutes for memoir writers

Kia ora,

Wishing you a peaceful, happy beginning to your 2026.  That’s me above, after a sweaty uphill stroll through the forest.

Is finishing your book one of your New Year’s resolutions? If it is, now’s a good time to think about planning it into your routine.

30 minutes a day, a few times a week. It might not seem like much, but it’s the difference between writing your story, and just thinking about it.

The average person can write nearly 400 words in 30 minutes. That’s more than one page. If you wrote for half an hour, three days per week, for just one month, that equates to around 40 pages of your future memoir or history.

If you did this for six months, that’s a 240 page book. Not a bad size for a memoir.

And, right here at the beginning of the year, all you need to do is decide to do it. And then keep deciding to work on it, three times per week.

Yes, it will start out a jumbled mess. And yes, you won’t always stick to your new routine. But if you can lock in, and ‘get back on the horse’ after those days you’ve missed, and if you can forgive yourself for not being the perfect writer (I mean, honestly, who is?) chances are, you’ll finish your memoir within a year.

To those who are up to their elbows in their stories, would you like to share 100 words from your story that relate to the theme ‘beginnings’? I’d love to share them with readers of this newsletter. Just reply to this email and send them my way.

Remember, your story matters,
