Why your voice matters and mistakes don’t

Kia ora from a beautiful blue sky day here in Golden Bay,

How are you?

Today I want to talk about making mistakes when you’re writing.

As I write I’m pondering whether you can make mistakes as you write. I mean, you obviously can, according to the rules of grammar, and depending on what discipline you’re writing in.

But while you’re writing the first draft of your very own story, which barely anyone will see, I don’t think you can.

I’m editing a book for someone who learned English later in life and there are plenty of little phrases that technically should be corrected. But as I edit, I’m mindful that I want to ensure his spirit shines from his words. And I like to retain the voice of the writer, almost as if you can hear them speaking.

It’s a fine line I walk as an (occasional) editor – to maintain the true voice of the writer, while ensuring it reads well.

And as a writer I like working with editors who help me look like a better writer, but retain my personality.

So to you oh writerly one, be yourself. Write for the enjoyment of writing.

And one day, someone will read your words and hear your voice.

    1. Amazing to read you’re making a start on it Tania! It really takes you back into the emotions doesn’t it? Can you do this in one year? I think it’s possible to write your first draft, if you can really focus on it. Note: the first draft is only the first step, a very important step! Crucial even! But stet they there’s the polishing and sculpting to be done 🌹
