Everytime I meet someone who is busy writing their memoir, life story or family history I feel so happy.
Regardless of whether they’re on my memoir writing course or not, it feels like good historic house-work is being done.
When I learn that people are recording those details, I know members of their families will one day appreciate their work, if not now, perhaps tomorrow.
My dear Aunt Joyce passed away over the weekend. I had been meaning to get up north to spend some time with her and learn more about our family history for the last six months. It was as if, somehow I knew. But sadly, I didn’t visit her.
Here are five things I wish I could have asked her, in case they help you:
- I want to see our family tree, going back the last five generations
- Where was my dad posted as a soldier and where did he serve?
- What was my father like, as a brother to her?
- What was her mother, my grandmother like? What did she enjoy, or dislike? What did she look like?
- Did she have memories of her grandparents, my great grandparents that she could share?
I hope that some of these prompts help you with your story.
If you’d like to dive much more deeply into the ‘how’ of writing your memoir, check out my online course Write Your Memoir, which you are so welcome to join.
Or not, you are totally welcome to enjoy these posts and not join the course too.
On my course you get access to all the knowledge that I accumulated over decades of writing dozens of books and thousands of articles. You also get so much writing and technical support from me, and access to a growing and friendly Facebook group. In one week I will increase the price by $100.
Write on dear one,
