Critic or creativity as a memoir writer?

Kia ora 👋🏼

I think most people go through a process when they’re writing their memoir. Do they listen to the doubt? Or honour the story that wants to flow out of them?

Do they follow the guidance of their inner critic and give up? Or write their story regardless?

At last month’s online memoir gathering I witnessed a writer who had shifted from being unsure of her story, to embracing what I call her ‘messy first draft’ process. And the story poured from her, in a river of genius. We were captivated.

So much of writing a memoir is about trusting in the story that wants to emerge. I love watching writers click into pure creative mode. We all have it within us. But many of us experienced criticism from people – sometimes teachers, parents, friends, often well meaning – that made us doubt the value of our writing.

I’m gonna tell you right now, that was never about your talent as a writer. That was about a bunch of rules that had nothing to do with your creativity. So if you have a story bursting to come out of you – just let it out. You might be surprised at how glorious it is.

PS I have a memoir course that includes a monthly invite to a supportive, safe, encouraging online gathering. Beginner memoir writers from all over NZ (and further) share half a page of their story, and receive non-critical feedback on how their stories land with people. It’s the most encouraging experience for writers, especially given that writing can be such a solitary task. We’ll meet Friday 25 September. Our writing theme is ‘new light.’ Join us via this link and start on the course immediately – it’ll arrive via a series of emails 📮.
